The sperm motility enhancer (Sperm Mobil / GM501) is a special activating solution we use in the laboratory during IVF treatment to stimulate completely immotile sperm cells and to determine their viability. For successful fertilisation to be achieved in the microinjection (ICSI) procedure, the sperm to be injected into the egg must be alive, and the clearest indicator that a sperm is alive is its movement. However, in severe asthenoteratozoospermic cases where there is no motile sperm in the semen at all, or in sperm obtained surgically from the testicles (TESE/TESA), movement is usually not observed. In such cases, our embryologists place the sperm into this motility-enhancing solution to briefly stimulate the living but immotile sperm and enable them to move.
Thanks to this method, living sperm are easily distinguished, and the risk of injecting a non-viable sperm into the egg is eliminated, preventing fertilisation failures. The Sperm Mobil application is a safe laboratory step; the solution has not been shown to have any adverse effect on the sperm's genetic structure or on the developing embryo. It is an application we resort to particularly in cases of surgical sperm retrieval or challenging male infertility where motility is 0%, in order to obtain healthy embryos and support your chance of pregnancy.
