The microfluidic sperm sorting chip (microchip method / sperm chip) is an advanced laboratory technology we use in IVF treatment to select the healthiest, most motile sperm cells with the soundest genetic structure. Mimicking in the laboratory the challenging journey sperm undertake through the prospective mother's reproductive system during natural conception, this system contains micro-channels too small to see with the naked eye. Unlike standard sperm preparation methods, this procedure does not use high-speed centrifugation, which can stress the sperm, to separate them. Only the sperm that manage to swim through these special channels and reach the finish line by their own motility are collected; in this way, the structurally soundest sperm with the lowest risk of DNA damage are prepared for the microinjection procedure.
This method is preferred to improve treatment success particularly in cases with sperm count, motility or morphology abnormalities, recurrent IVF failures or a history of miscarriage, and high sperm DNA damage. By selecting the sperm with the healthiest genetic material, the sperm chip increases the likelihood of higher-quality embryos developing, while also supporting these embryos' chances of implanting in the uterus and resulting in a healthy pregnancy. Fully compatible with natural functioning, containing no chemical substances and causing no physical harm to the sperm, this method is a very powerful step that can be added to your treatment at the laboratory stage.
