Oocyte activation (calcium ionophore / GM508) is a special laboratory technique we use for couples who have had no fertilisation at all, or very low fertilisation rates, in previous attempts. During natural conception, when the sperm cell enters the egg it creates calcium oscillations inside the egg, effectively “awakening” it and initiating embryo development. However, particularly in cases of deficiencies in the sperm's head structure or egg-related conditions, this calcium oscillation does not occur even when the sperm is injected into the egg, and fertilisation fails. In such cases, immediately after the microinjection (ICSI) procedure, your eggs are kept for a certain period in the calcium-enriched calcium ionophore solution (GM508). This solution externally mimics the missing calcium signal, enabling the egg to be activated and helping to initiate the fertilisation process.
This method can be used to improve the chance of treatment particularly in cases of severe male infertility such as round-headed sperm (globozoospermia), in those experiencing egg maturation problems, or in couples where no embryo development is observed without an apparent cause. This is a safe laboratory step applied to your eggs after sperm injection and added to the laboratory process. It does not require any additional procedure to be performed on you during egg collection. Our aim is to overcome the barrier to fertilisation at the cellular level in order to obtain an embryo and to maximise your chance of achieving pregnancy.
